The holes in the cap are permanently opened

The media could not be loaded. This salt shaker was a disappointment. I imagined that it was similar to a spice shaker where I can cover the holes of the shaker by twisting the cap in some way, and open the holes when I need to use the shaker. Turns out that this salt shaker cannot be closed. The cap has permanent openings. This means if the shaker tips over the salt spills out of the shaker. In addition the salt cannot be stored in this container as it will turn into a brick by absorbing moisture. Finally, I hoped that the shaker would be made out of heavy duty plastic, but the plastic is pretty thin. My plan for the shaker was to keep it in my car so I can have it ready in case the steps to my house ice up when I arrive home after a day at work. So I needed to come up with solution that would keep the salt from spilling out in the car. I found a thin piece of plastic that I could insert under the cap and still be able to twist the cap. Before using the shaker I need to remove the cap and remove the plastic. The plastic needs to be replaced every few uses as it gets torn by the threads of the cap. The shaker is 10.5" tall, and 3.5" wide. In attached video I have it next to a half gallon jug of water for comparison. The holes are 1/4 in diameter and work well with Calcium Chloride Pellets but are too small for rock salt. Pellets came out in a nice amount (not too much not too little), but rock salt is a bit too large so I got only a few smaller rocks with each shake. Looking at how this shaker is built one can create their own shaker from an old coffee jug (or any similar container) by drilling 1/4 inch holes in the jug cover. And if you have multiple jugs covers for that container you can switch between them: use one to store the salt and one to dispense the salt when needed. When I purchased this shaker I paid $8.09 and it was eligible for free shipping, I noticed that the price on this shaker fluctuates greatly and as I post this review it is $12.73 plus shipping of $5.75. My rating is based on the price of $8.09. Had I paid more my rating would be lower. With my "fix" it is usable, but overall I am disappointed. A local home improvement store has a shaker full of salt with a closing lid for $12. I hoped I was getting a better shaker but I did not. When time comes to replace this shaker I will be looking for a different model. Ali Julia review

Not good for salting; likely best used for seed or fertilizer

I purchased this to use for salting my driveway and sidewalks in the Chicago area (can get pretty icy/snowy here). I haven’t had to use it much yet but can tell already it was a waste of money for this application. Using this the first time, I ended up refilling it (not with ease) multiple times, wasting salt spilled trying to get it in the small opening, and then in the end didn’t even put the top back on for last few runs because I had difficulties getting the salt to come out/spread unless the whole top was off. So in that case, might as well use a large cup or bowl from the kitchen or something, same effect anyways. With the top on, I barely got done with about 2-3 sidewalk squares and it was empty not to mention took way longer than it should have. With the top off, about 1-2 sidewalk squares and mostly concentrated in one pile. After this I found in my garage a gallon container I bought last year which had salt in it and was close to this price. Now I buy bigger bags of salt bc these size containers aren’t a good value for the salt, but buying one would be a better idea in my opinion than this spreader; it holds 2x as much as this little thing and the holes on top spin the same etc. and actually distribute the salt easier than this container. Then use the salt in it and keep refilling with salt from the big bags for your dispenser, not this. It probably is perfect for spreading weed n feed or seeding grass and fertilizer or whatnot; winter salt I think is bigger pellets/tends to clump if it gets moist, etc. so the holes on the top naturally just don’t fit most of the salt inside. Also, I think more salt is needed per square area than fertilizer, so I wouldn’t recommend paying for this for use in winter ice or snow. I gave 3 stars though bc like I said, for fertilizer or seeding grass, it is likely a better use of the product and is probably what it’s meant for. If it was sold only as a salt spreading item, I would have given less stars.

I like that this was a basic easy design and I'm sure it would work great to spread salt melt in the winter. As for fertilizer? No. the holes are way to big for fertilizer. Not sure why, but when I looked at it I thought that when the lid turned you could adjust the size of the holes, sort of like some spice dispensers are made. The holes do not close off. It's not as versatile as the product description states.

Easy And Fun To Use Shaker Container!

This shaker container is awesome...so handy! I'm so glad I decided to order it along with the bag of ice melter ahead of winter-time this season...for once, I was well-prepared! It is practical, useful, and efficient in its purpose. I really like how it sprinkles ice melter evenly and not excessively. Along with the green granules in the brand of ice melter I bought...it was just perfect for sufficient coverage on the icy sidewalks. Fun to use...as fun as sprinkling ice melt can get in the brrrr cold of winter! Thanks for the chance to review...I really do recommend this product to others! :)

Use Saves me $$$ Money!

Okay, I think I originally ordered this just to have something but what I learned was it saves me money. I spread way less than what I previously did with a paper cup. The spread is even and enough to properly cover the area. Highly recommend! It’s convenient, neat and sturdy.

There might be better for better price or make your own

Works. Does seem a bit cheap for the price. Note: Material bit too thin at the handle. Expect it will eventually fail there. Use two hands and hold the body rather than handle. Large salt will not fit through the holes.
