Bright handy UV light

Great size, easy to carry everyday.

WBM Smart Portable Sterilizer Light, Ultraviolet Disinfection Lamp, Handheld Chargeable UVC +UVA Lighting Kill 99.99% Harmful Substances for Hotel, Wardrobe, Toilet, Office The sterilizer comes in a simple black and white cardboard box that looks recyclable. Inside the box, is a simple one-page instruction book and the sterilizer itself that comes simply packaged in a plastic bubble wrap. At first glance, this sterilizer looks very much like a small work light that I have. The rubberized outside case has a waterproof-ish feel to it, but it is not. There is a magnet on the bottom that seems powerful enough to hold the flashlight up, and it has an oversized pen clip type arm at the top so you could clip it to a pocket. The battery compartment slides open with a locking clip other than the actual slide itself. The device takes three AAA batteries which are not included. I need to double-check the ad because I thought this said something about being chargeable. The battery slides up into the handle one after the other, and you'll have to pay very close attention to the diagram as to which direction they go. It's molded into the plastic but not very easy to see. The instructions have a bunch of parameters and scientific data about the wavelengths of the infrared LEDs, but I'm not certain what all that means. also, the instructions make reference to a UV test card to show the intensity of the light, but there is no card enclosed with this lamp. Perhaps they're just putting that in there for instruction. one click of the power button gives you a flashlight which is actually fairly bright. The second click changes it to the ultraviolet which to the eye while does look like it's a bright purple LED but I can't tell how well it's working, or if at all. The LED emitters themselves are exposed with no shield or lens over them. Perhaps that is to increase the efficiency of the light, but it seems that it would leave them more open to getting dirty or damaged in storage. There is no storage bag or case that comes with this. Sure, you could put it back in the bubble wrap and in the box, but that's not really very convenient for usage and storage. I'm a little up in the air with some of the claims of this portable sterilizer, and I think for the price point this is a very disappointing product. I feel that I need more information about the usage and recommendation on how to store the actual product without damage. After researching the use of UV light for sterilization, it is recommended that you have UV resistant goggles for the safety of your eyes when using a device like this. not only is there no goggles included with this, there's no mention of any possibility of eye damage in the literature that comes with the product itself. The ad page does mention that you should not look into the light with your naked eye but doesn't go any further than that. If you use any UV device for sterilization, I would absolutely recommend UV safety glasses to protect yourself. Due to some of the safety issues and some of the quality issues mentioned above in the product itself, I cannot recommend this product.

Surprisingly is UVC, though not strong

I've tested a few handheld "UVC lights" and so far, this is the only one that is not just a fancy blacklight. And I'm surprised it doesn't come with more protection against UV. A cover or an additional button press or hold. UV light in any range is harmful to the eyes, and guess what, that includes when it reflects off things. Like your phone case. Please protect your eyes with sunglasses when using this, and do not shine it directly on skin. This light comes with an included test card that is a bit generous in it's findings. I have shown it below a brand name test card so I could see if there was a difference. These work by turning increasingly dark shades of purple depending on the intensity of UV light in one window, and the letters UVC will show up in green under UVC light in the other. The UVC letters are slightly shiny, so they will reflect most lights anyway. My first photo, a control picture taken under a 'happy light' that is supposed to mimic sunlight but without UV rays. Both cards still registered a very slight ultraviolet light where there was none, and no UVC. You can see the shiny letters in this photo. My second photo is with a strong, plain old black light that is not UVC at all. My ultraviolet control, at about 6 inches distance. Both cards show a strong ultraviolet light and no UVC. The third photo, taken with this light, is about an inch off the cards. The brand name card recognizes a higher level of ultraviolet light, but less intense UVC light, while the card that came with this light has UVC in bright green. The last photo, taken with this light about 6 inches away from the cards, It shows a similar level of ultraviolet light, but the test card that comes with this light already says it is UVC while the brand name card does not recognize enough UVC light to be antibacterial. So I'd say that yes, this is UVC, but not as strong as the test card would lead you to believe. Hold it very close to the object. This takes three AAA batteries, all with the positive side toward the butt of the light. The battery compartment does NOT twist open, even though it looks like it would. It's a plastic cover that slides off. Be careful, it's easy to seperate the sides all the way to the end of the flashlight when opening it. There is also a regular, non adjustable flashlight at the end of this. Be really careful. With no protection on the ultraviolet light, it's easy to shine this in your face just turning off the flashlight part. The regular light is on the end, the ultraviolet lights along one side. There is one button you press to cycle through both functions and off.

Very weak UV light

I was not as impressed with this device. It did not come with any kind of carrying case or protective cover to keep the LED lights from being damaged. It has a magnet on one end that allows you to stick it to a file cabinet or metal desk and this is convenient because you must have anything under it exposed for min 30 seconds. I watched a lady in Target using a similar device that she quickly waved in the general direction of her shopping cart and proudly proclaimed to her children and anyone else nearby that her cart had suddenly been "fully sanitized" and she was ready to enter the store. There is so much misinformation about these devices and the cottage industry that's sprung up around selling them to people who don't know how to use them properly is appalling. Overall, I'm impressed with the build of the light (minus the lack of protection for the LEDs) and magnet, but not with the strength of the UV lights. It's not worth the money in my opinion.

Works okay

I stay several days a week in hotel rooms. In the environment we live in today publicly used spaces are a risk to our health. With this being said, I decided to get this product with the fore mentioned thought in mind. The LED light is plenty bright enough to be effective, however the UV light although effective is time consuming to use. Let me explain why. The light requires you to, “brush”, the surface to sanitize it. The instructions state that to achieve full sterilization you need to keep it in contact for thirty seconds. This along with the small area the UV light covers takes some time to complete the process. With that being said I will say that it works as described, but takes a while to complete the sterilization. For that reason I gave it 3 Stars.
