Next Level
I have owned a Presto dehydrater for a few years now and make jerky occasionally on it- Decided to give it to my son and up my game and I have to say, the Excalibur is totally on a different level- Made jerky the first time in it and what a difference- Texture, taste, appearance was outstanding and wife approved!! If you want a rockin’ unit spend the extra cash on this Excalibur, you will not regret it!

Value is questionable
First thing I noticed when opening the dehydrator is that the dials were not straight. As one popped off when I removed the tape holding them I checked the other one. As you can see in the pictures the shafts are misaligned in the holes. One of the knobs was pushing against the trim. Another poster has a picture of this exact problem. Manufacturer must not have fixed the issue. Two of the trays were crammed together inside the machine. Had to use excess force to remove, no real issue. As some other posters mention some of the trays push out on the front making door not hang quite plumb. Not a real issue. You need air exchange to dehydrate. Small self tapping screws are used to hold the screen in place protruding into the drying cavity. These are sharp. Should not be in that space as you could cut yourself cleaning. Temperature never got up to to 165 when checked with a Raytec infrared thermometer after hours of running empty. Possible that using a different measuring tool would yield better results. Timer knob was difficult to turn due to pushing against the trim. Not sure it would work properly being pushed against it like that as it probably rotates as it times down. Yes it’s louder but that’s because it’s probably moving more volume of air inside as compared to the quiet competition. It takes air movement and exchange to dehydrate. Never dehydrated anything in it as I had decided to return at this point. Even at the severely discounted sale price I did not feel that this product had enough value at the quality level I received this unit in. If the knobs had been properly installed probablyI would have kept the unit.

Bought in 2016
I bought this and have used it frequently since December of 2016. I am reviewing it now because I see reviews for when items are first purchased and would also wondered if the items were still in working condition. This food dehydrator is still in perfect condition, it get regular use for different things and I highly recommend it.

I will never pay for beef jerky again. Why didn't I order this thing YEARS ago?!?
I had NO idea how fast and easy it was to make FANTASTIC beef jerky. Overnight, I marinated ribeye steaks strips (little less than half inch thick slices) in four different flavors (brown sugar/cinnamon/vanilla, jalapeno, salt and vinegar and 18-year-old scotch), set the dehydrator to 155° for 6 hours and out came the best tasting, most(ly) tender jerky I could have imagined. I had my doubts about my choices of marinade, but, surprisingly, they all taste really good. The jalapeno gives a really nice, warm burn and the brown sugar is so sweet. I'm really excited about this thing, I kid you not. The unit itself arrived in perfect shape. It's lighter than it looks because it's mostly empty space. It comes with plastic grills to lay on top of the trays. It could be considered a little bit loud, I guess, but it's no louder than your average microwave. The fan blows just hard enough where you can kind of feel the breeze coming out of the sides where it's vented. It has a nice clean look to it and the dials (one for the heat, one for the timer) feel sturdy, not cheap. In fact, the whole structure is very solid, so I'm not worried about beating it up when I move it around. The book that came with it has general instructions for different kinds of food; several types of jerky, fruits, vegetables, etc. and suggested dehydration times. The jerky was sliced in different thicknesses, so the thinner slices were a little too dry and the thicker slices could have used another 30 minutes to an hour, maybe, but I definitely liked it just like it was. You can tell the book wasn't slapped together, like you might expect as an added "accessory" used as a selling point. it is actually useful. I might add to this after I've dehydrated some fruits and other things, but, as fast and easy as it was to make this, I don't see how I could be disappointed. One thing is for sure. I have bought my LAST bag of beef jerky from the Internet/store. UPDATE: 06/17/2015 In addition to the more expensive ribeye, I'm also dehydrating thick cut pork chops the same way. They are even better than the ribeye. I marinate overnight and dehydrate for 6 hours and they are done. I've also been dehydrating a dozen bananas at a time in addition to apples. I sliced them kind of thick, maybe a little larger than a quarter of an inch and even bigger on the apples since they dry out down to nothing. I usually add cinnamon to the bananas and dehydrate for 12 hours. The book says less, but 12 hours gets them nice and dry. They end up a little leathery and chewy. It's very sweet, like I've added sugar to it. Very surprised how sweet they get. The apples are amazing. They also are extremely sweet. I usually add a little cinnamon to those as well. I don't add sugar to any of the fruit I dehydrate, ever. It is just that sweet all by itself. The dehydrator will hold about 10 moderately sized apples on the 9 trays. I also am dehydrating Roma tomatoes. If you've ever eaten the sun-dried tomato or had it on your salad, you will absolutely LOVE the dehydrated tomatoes. I snack on them straight out of the bag or put them on sandwiches which gives it a flavor I've never tasted before. Needless to say, it is excellent. I sliced them very thick -- like nearly a half an inch - since they shrink down to nothing. if you like them thin, then they are excellent that way also. Next I'll be dehydrating watermelon, cantaloupe, kiwi and mango. After dehydrating, the flavor and sweetness multiplies by 10, so anything you can think of that is sweet will be supersweet once it's done. I can't believe what I'm eating is all natural! The plastic mesh comes with the dehydrator, but do yourself a massive favor and by the Teflon coated dehydrator sheets specifically for this model. They are about $14 for 9 of them. It is WELL worth it, because cleaning up the mesh screens that came with it is rather difficult.

Excellent!
Excellent product! This dehydrator made me happy with every batch I processed, through a variety of vegetables and fruits, from garlic to tomatoes. Reasonably quiet -- it was not disturbingly loud, even on high fan. It is quite large; holds a good quantity of whatever you're drying. I recommend considering its size, and where you're planning to store it when not in use.

High quality dehydrator
I am very happy with this product - it has a substantial capacity, and drying is efficiently accomplished with its powerful heating element and air circulating fan. It is also well designed with a sturdy (plastic) construction. It certainly costs more than many similar products on the market - but it is well worth it. I must point out that it is noisy. Some of that noise is from the fan as would be expected. The most annoying noise comes from the rattling of its many shelves while the machine is running. You won't be wanting to work in the same room as this machine while it is being used for the many hours that a typical drying cycle requires.

A reliable friend to help out with healthy eating.
I bought this as a gift for my husband. He adores biltong which costs a lot of money for what it is, so I thought it would be great to be able to make our own. We have had our first attempt, and it was so easy and the machine worked brilliantly. But this machine has also opened a whole new world to us, in terms of raw foods. My husband is wheat intolerant, so we have to avoid bread and biscuits and try to follow the "caveman diet" (natural, unprocessed foods). Raw food has many recipes that use dehydrators to create all sorts of breads, crackers and treats that use natural raw ingredients that replicate the texture of our highly processed diet without the bad bits and with more flavour. I've been having fun experimenting with all sorts of things, and this dehydrator works away in the background drying the foods out. It has a huge capacity, so I have yet to fill it up, but I have needed more than 5 drawers, so it's good to have the big one. Also the timer is helpful, switching it off when it's completed, so I can leave things in at night and not worry about them being overdone. It is rather large (the size of a large microwave) and it does make a gentle hum, but I keep mine in a backroom, so it doesn't bother me at all. My children love the dried fruit that it makes (dried mango is a favourite) and I know it is pure goodness - no added sugars or preservatives that dried fruit from the shops has in it. There are some great raw recipes at therawtarian.com which are simple to make, with great success. And I'm looking forward to perfecting my biltong. I feel I have definitely bought the Rolls Royce of dehydrators that dries things easily and is reliable, and it's going to take a few years for it to pay itself off on the biltong front, but I believe my family's health is definitely benefitting from the healthier direction of our diet and reduced additives that we are eating.

Loving my new dehydrator.
I have only had this Dehydrator for about 10 days so far and I have used it almost every day and I love it, I couldn't be happier the results are fantastic. It has loads of room and the sheets are really easy to clean. My previously dehydrator was cheaper but didn't last, I wore it out, now with that one, one mango took 2.5 trays with this dehydrator I can get one mango on each tray. I also find it very useful for crisping up homemade biscuits.

The Best Dehydrator I ever owned!
I became interested in the whole raw vegan lifestyle about 2 years ago. I bought a stackable nesco dehydrator for my first dehydrator it was good. But those types of dehydrators are not suitable for a raw vegan. I never could seem to make my Kale chips proper in a nesco for some reason they kept turning out really flat. not all curly like the ones you normally get when you buy them at the health food store. I also could not make wraps or crackers with a liquid consistency plus it is so annoying stacking and unstacking those stackable dehydrators. so all that lead me over to finally purchasing a Excalibur I see most raw vegans use these dehydrators and all cant stop raving enough about these. so I just had to buy one! I've had my Excalibur dehydrator for about 3 months now and Love it I use it regularly! I make the most amazing kale chips with mine that taste better than the ones you buy from the health food store. I make my own raw vegan crackers, raw vegan wraps, raw vegan cookies, raw Vegan Bacon, apple chips, I dehydrate onions, garlic and celery and make my own onion, garlic and celery powders, I make raw vegan pizza crusts in this dehydrator. everything turns out great! I love it I cannot live without it. I also take out the trays and put my jars of yogurt and cheese to culture in there I wouldn't be able to do this with the small 5 tray one so this 9 tray is very handy! I love love love it! :) If you are thinkin of making crackers and wet things like wraps n such don't forget to buy the teflex sheets they are a must!

Super achat, mais un peu bruyant.
Très contente de mon achat : fonctionne parfaitement, déshydrate bien, efficacement. Je fais des crackers, du cuir de fruit, des chips de kale. Ça me convient très bien.
