Essential item for serious belt sanding!
If you do a lot of belt sanding, then I highly recommend swapping out your steel & cork platen for one of these. They reduce the friction a great deal, thus reducing heat and drag. I have sanded many floors using my 4x24 hand-held sander. The graphite pad reduced the heat in a very significant way. One thing to be aware of though; some sander bases are not well suited to this cloth pad. I used to run an old Bosch with a nice flat base that worked well with this. That sander died and I am now using a Makita with a honey-comb pattern on the base. These graphite pads require a flat platen. I will probably modify this by filling in the honey-comb pattern with epoxy or some other durable material, then go back to the graphite impregnated cloth pad. Update: I did modify my Makita as noted above. I used ball-mill on Dremel to rough up each pit in honey-combed platen then filled in with JB Weld; then flattened on emery cloth (on granite plate). Now graphite cloth works very well on this tuned-up sander.

Pays for itself within an hour... they're really a Must-have!
These platens are absolutely necessary if you're gonna run your belt sander for more than just a few minutes. They make all the difference when it comes to reducing heat build-up and the RPMs remain 20% higher than sanding without them. A graphite platen on any belt sander will pay for themselves within a hour or two just by extending the life of the belt. I don't do a lot of belt sanding, but I do buy at least two of these each time. They last about... 20 hours of sanding depending on how hard you're pressing down. If you do light sanding or sanding for 2 minutes and stopping these platens could last 60 hours. That's a lot of sanding!

Great for almost any belt sander.
I bought this for a different brand of belt sander, but the physics is the same for all. The graphite platen has a much lower coefficient of friction and so causes less heat to build up on the sanding belt. In my case, I had to trim the pad to fit, which was quite easy with a utility knife and sharp blade, and also to create new holes for mounting. I used this in place of the sacrificial plate that was on my sander. Highly recommend.

The BEST improvement for a belt sander!
This item made a WORLD of difference in the longevity of sanding belts and the amount of heating of the sander itself. I am resurfacing an outdoor deck. This platen pad will save you money and time. My sander is not a Bosch unit, so I had to adapt it to fit. If you need to do a lot of belt sanding, get this before you begin. It will put a smile on your face. NO B.S.!

Great upgrade for old sander
Perfect upgrade for my old Porter Cable belt sander. Belts last 10x longer after replacing the stainless wear plate with this graphite platen.
