not as small as the Q&A indicates
It is a perfectly fine compass, just no one can use a tape measure the specs say item dimension is "6.9 x 3.8 x 1.2 inches" the photo in the listing says it is 1.5 in 3.81cm the Q&A says "about 3/4” (0.75 inches in diameter" I was hoping that last number was right(That is the size I needed), but NO the one I got was 1 1/8 in 3cm. They probably count on you not taking the trouble to send it back since it is inexpensive.

fits in hilt of survival knife
My old survival knife had a similar compass which eventually leaked and became an adornment--useless. The replacement is slightly larger, than the hilt opening, but judicial use of a power grinder allowed it to fit. The reading is good and the lettering fine.

Inaccurate without constant agitation
I used this compass on my backpack strap. After a few days of use, this compass became stuck and I would often have to agitate the compass and wait for it to reset. If I failed to do this, it generally meant I was walking 90 degrees in the wrong direction. Spend a few extra dollars and get a compass that works.

I love this little compass.
I bought this compass about a year ago to replace the same style of compass when it broke. This compass is perfect for finding your general direction. I have used it to teach my 6 year old nephew about directions. I have used it to get my bearings when hiking in Arizona, bike-riding in Arkansas and sight-seeing in Mexico. You can take it in your carry-on on an airplane. This is cheaply made so if you throw it on the sidewalk or a rock it will break.

Does what it should!
This is very obviously a cheap little compass, however can be very useful. I use mine primarily for grouse and pheasant hunting when all I'm really concerned about is maintaining a steady direction. I have yet to find a similar pin-on design that is of any higher quality. ***Update 09Oct12*** I updated my rating from 4 to 5 stars. I bought several of these for family members and they have all worked great over two hunting seasons. I always bring a spare compass (two in fact, one being thisCammenga Model 27CS Olive Drab Lensatic Compass ) but rarely use them due to the easy use nature of this pin on compass.

Very flimsy. The pin to hold it on fails. Lost 2in a week.
